May 18th, 2010I often hear the praise “Swimming is so great for you body.” And my usual response, buffered by a smile, is “Not the kind of swimming I did.”
Exercise is fantastic for all. Preparation for competition is a fine line we all tread in not allowing aches and pains the credibility they sometimes demand of us while truly acknowledging when something has gone off the train tracks.

April 24th, 2010Dan Coyle presented an overview of his book then sat down and talked excellence and application of intentional talent identification and development– in the context of our sport. It was interesting that with Bob Bowman in the audience and although the Author didn’t investigate NBAC –how many of Dan’s findings fit Michael like a glove.
The presentation was filmed and I plan to encourage the staff to read the book and then we’ll show the presentation in it’s entirety to our competitive staff, JSL, and swim school leadership.
When Dan was ask by Mike Bottom (who said he was going to have his entire college team read the book) who he’d think would gain the most from reading the book other than coaches he responded –parents. I must admit my thoughts were bending quite a few times to my children.
Dan’s research clearly indicated that the talent hotbeds were not a matter of luck, chance, or even resources but numerous other factors that have to do more with culture and wise coaching. As our hunch may already be –basically the start, how the progression is managed, emotional engagement, motivation and proper patterns are so important.
