Rocky vs Drago

At the ASCA Convention Coach Salo made the comment that “one day I walked into the pool and there was a giant tree branch floating in the pool.  I made the decision that somehow that branch was going to get used during practice.”

Innovation and creativity are critical to success and the fundamental simplicity of practical and functional strength in creating great athletes is often overlooked.  Find success in everything you do and tie it into your passion.

A sign of the times?

Sometimes it the simplest things that bring about the greatest breakthroughs

Back in Virginia Beach

Last week I had the opportunity to visit with many coaches and support staff at the annual American Swim Coaches Convention.

Personally I like to listen to the stories about great performances and clubs.  Upon reflection you can usually ascertain a few qualities that overlap and provide further insight into what it takes to be successful in the sport of swimming and beyond.

What I gleaned from the experience is that personal commitment to excellence, recovery via sleep and nutrition, and a collective team make clubs, colleges, and individuals highly successful in their endeavors.

Few of the interesting thoughts…

Sabir Muhammad is the oldest man on the USA National Team (33) and hadnt swum competitively in 5 years until going a lifetime best in the 50 free at World Champ Trials in a torn suit (gotta stop flexing Sabir:)…he practices in the water 2 hours a week with a focus on speed and technique and 4 hours of weight/dryland training.

Dr. Hall may be one of the finest new coaches to enter the sport…I highly encourage any and all to visit him down in Miami.  www.theraceclub.net

Somebody has memorized pi to the 60,000th place

Team sports support the competitive fire in our athletes

Jack Roach and Michael Bohl have a phenomenal amount of refreshing candor for a coach and as such have a phenomenal amount to offer the swimming community

David Marsh used the pygmalion effect to describe swimming in a way I had never thought of before

Glad to be back and looking forward to sharing with all in Virginia Beach….
