Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009Im not often excitable or overly impressed by athletic feats of achievement. Hyperbole can be left to Dick Vitale. I like the grit of circumstance that happens when we least expect it, but nonetheless must overcome.
I was a young lifeguard when I wrote an inscription into a shed at the pool I trained at growing up in high school. It was after a particularly hard day of practice, one which I can write without doubt or pause that I never wanted to see a pool or my coach again. I can still cite it verbatim today…
It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. I found purpose in the words because they resonated with how I felt. Its not about the times, the standards, the meets…its about challenging myself to own what I did, do, and aim to achieve rather than accept limitations.
There is success to be found when doubt asks you to step down or away. Rise up to challenges so that you can appreciate the opportunity. And allow yourself a momentary feeling of pride that accompanies such a decision before pressing forward.
